Cell phone plus driving
Trouble waiting to happen
Red Jeep in the ditch
(On our way to the Neil Diamond concert, we encountered some pretty bad weather. I was driving a separate vehicle with my brother in the passenger seat. My mom was driving her Jeep and my brother-in-law his truck. We called each other frequently to check in and comment on upcoming road conditions. My brother answered my cell phone when my mom called. They had a brief conversation. When he hung up, he casually said that my mom just slid off the road into the median while he was on the phone with her. He gave her a hard time the rest of the trip.)
I love haiku. I have spent many an evening writing in haiku with family and friends.
I live for haiku
Syllables and brevity
A geeky girl's dream
Bookmark. Follow it.
Share with me your own haiku.
Joy will come to you.
Silly, reflective
Any subject will be fine
Communicate it
I welcome your comments especially if they are left in haiku form.

School assignment
(As I have been working on my electronic portfolio, I encountered this assignment I did. It was a summary of four chapters of a classroom management book. When I said I loved Haiku, I was serious.)
All five hands are up
My eyes roll as I notice
The same five students
Who do I help first?
I'll start with the closest one
Class! Be quiet. NOW!
Ineffective? Yes
The questions are numberless
They just don't get it.
Met a man named Jones
He advised Praise, Prompt, and Leave
This sounds intriguing
Talking them through the problem
Is doing their work
Notice the right stuff
Give a prompt in less than ten
Turn and walk away
A visual prompt
That's an amazing idea
Easy reference
Verbal/Visual
Don't stop your instruction there!
Do! Get physical
Say it, see it, do--
Like rather, rinse, and repeat--
Are done as needed

Texted haiku
(My sister just sent these to me via text. They're part of an adventure to a ghost town last Thanksgiving.)
A ten dollar coat
You'd think it'd be pretty cheap
But no, it's quite warm
----------
Boys, turn your head please
Peeing down a mine shaft, Wow!
This is quite a thrill

A trip to the park
(Written by a group of young adults after a trip to the park.)
I went to a park
A super, fantastic park
Just the other day
----------
A nice, quiet stroll
Ends in a discovery
A green dinosaur
----------
Making upward steps
Resting rump on metal sheet
Whee! Down! Down! Down! Plop!
----------
Two seated Dino
Gee! What a fun idea!
Don't fall off the back
----------
Diggers, swings, and slides
I'm not quite sure where to start
Dino's a good bet!
----------
My neck is quite stiff.
Oh, shoot, park is the subject.
I will try again.
----------
Diversity, huh?
You can find it at the park
It's called futbol, y'all
----------
Why not take it in
The hot sunshine or the shade
It's time for a nap

On dating, marriage, love, and none of the above
Ready to shout yes
If only he'd ask me out
HEY! I'm over here!
-------------
I say as I pass
"Heck yes, I'll go out with you!"
It still didn't work.
-------------
I'm available
Thursday, Friday, Saturday
Anytime really
-------------
Tall, dark, and handsome
Or even short, pale, and plain
ANYONE will do!
-------------
Tired of waiting
Destined to be an old maid
Pity, pity me
(by: the now married Amy)
-------------
Someday my prince will...
Will what? Come? I doubt it now.
The years have been cruel.
(Again from Amy)
-------------
My future husband
Hmmmm.... Will that day ever come?
Guess we'll wait and see.
-------------
A new singles branch
Tons of boys ripe and ready
There's hope for me yet!
-------------
Fireworks above
And a stirring in my bosom
This must be true love
-------------
My mom says aloud
"Oh, a grandbaby for me!"
Then sits back. Hopeless.
If only he'd ask me out
HEY! I'm over here!

Promise kept
A blessed day. Yay!
My sister sent the best gift
A slew of haiku
(My sister rummaged through her scrapbooks and keepsakes and rounded up good number of haiku from previous adventures. I'll only post a select few. They all make me giggle.)

My head hurts
Excedrin Migraine
It normally does the trick
Don't fail me tonight
I must endure it
My wish is to be asleep
On patrol tonight

My wish is to be asleep

A classic
Tall, dark and handsome
Or even short, pale and plain
Anyone will do!
(This is a treasured favorite from a haiku adventure I had with my sister one night. We wrote pages upon pages about future husbands and dating. It worked for her. She's happily married now.)

A lot to learn
3,000 new words
Intimidating request
One chemistry text
(This haiku was inspired by a statement found in a journal article I'm reading titled "Teaching Reading in Mathematics and Science". The authors cite an article by W.G. Holliday which suggested that a high school chemistry text can include 3,000 new vocabulary terms which is more than students are expected to learn in foreign language classes.)
